Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a complete language arts program?
Yes. Barton Reading & Spelling System is a complete language arts program.
Can I teach multiple children at the same time?
No two students with dyslexia learn at exactly the same pace. When tutoring one-on-one, a tutor can present the material at exactly the right pace for each student.
In a one-on-one setting it is less embarrassing to make a mistake when only the tutor sees it – not other students.
⚠️ The maximum group size is three. You cannot introduce new concepts or content if a student is absent. You can review content that has already been covered by the group.
How long does a lesson take?
A tutoring session should never last more than an hour.
For younger students, or those with significant focusing difficulty, a tutoring session may only last for 40 minutes.
But a Barton student must receive at least 2 hours of one-on-one tutoring each and every week in order for it to be frequent and intense enough “to stick.”
Some students can complete an entire lesson in a one-hour session. Others can only complete half the lesson in an hour.
It is important to pace the lesson to match the student. A student must master the new skill taught in that lesson, and be able to apply to both reading and spelling, easily and with about 95% accuracy, before moving on to the next lesson.
How long that takes depends upon the student. You cannot rush a student with dyslexia. If you move on before the student has mastered a new skill, the student will eventually hit a wall.
Timeline & Expectations
Tutoring twice a week in a one-on-one setting for 1 hour each session, year-round it will take:
Mild Dyslexia: 18-36 months
Moderate Dyslexia: 36-48 months
Profound Dyslexia: 48-60 months
⚠️ Significant attention issues will affect the student timeline.
For faster progress, tutor more often:
• 3 times per week, 1 hour each session, would cut the timeline by a third.
• 4 times per week, 1 hour each session, would cut the timeline in half.
Upon completing all 10 levels, students reach about a mid-ninth-grade reading level, which is considered the average adult reading level today. Many students test even higher than this after finishing the program.
Please Note
The Barton Reading & Spelling System cannot be used simultaneously with other reading improvement programs.
