Intense Intervention
The Barton Reading & Spelling System was designed for any student who:
✔ Struggles to easily and accurately decode words when reading
(despite being taught phonics).
✔ By second grade is slow and an inaccurate reader
(missing the oral reading fluency benchmarks).
✔ Has always struggled with spelling
(especially when writing sentences, stories, and compositions).
Criteria
Age and Grade
- At least 5 years old.
- In Kindergarten or higher.
Language Skills
- Must speak and comprehend spoken English.
- Not for children with a receptive or expressive language disorder.

Tutoring Options
One-on-One Tutoring
One-on-One tutoring is the best.
That’s because no two students with dyslexia learn at exactly the same pace. When tutoring one-on-one, a tutor can present the material at exactly the right pace for each student.
Also, it is much less embarrassing to make a mistake when only the tutor sees it – not other students.
Group Tutoring
Maximum group size is 3.
Most public schools with Response to Intervention programs (RTI) use the system as Tier 3 intervention—but only if they can meet with a group of 3 students for 1 hour per session, totaling 6 hours per week.
⚠️ You cannot introduce new concepts or content if a student is absent. You can review content that has already been covered by the group.
Time Commitment
One-on-One Tutoring
Minimum 2 Hours Per Week
When tutoring one-on-one, the minimum requirement is 2 hours per week, although more is better.
Tutoring Session
The minimum tutoring session is 30 minutes and the maximum is 1 hour.
Session Options
You can break the time commitment into two 1-hour sessions, three 45-minute sessions, or four 30-minute sessions.
Group Tutoring
Minimum 6 Hours Per Week
The intensity in three-on-one tutoring is not the same as one-on-one tutoring. To get the same intensity, you must tutor a group of 3 students for 6 hours each week.
Tutoring Session
The minimum tutoring session is 1 hour 15 minutes per day.
⚠️ You will not save time if you tutor 3 students at once. Each student in that group must receive the equivalent intensity of 2 hours of one-on-one tutoring per week.
⚠️ You cannot introduce new concepts or content if a student is absent. You can review content that has already been covered by the group.
Timeline & Expectations
Tutoring twice a week in a one-on-one setting for 1 hour each session, year-round it will take:
Mild Dyslexia: 18-36 months
Moderate Dyslexia: 36-48 months
Profound Dyslexia: 48-60 months
⚠️ Significant attention issues will affect the student timeline.
For faster progress, tutor more often:
• 3 times per week, 1 hour each session, would cut the timeline by a third.
• 4 times per week, 1 hour each session, would cut the timeline in half.
Upon completing all 10 levels, students reach about a mid-ninth-grade reading level, which is considered the average adult reading level today. Many students test even higher than this after finishing the program.
Please Note
The Barton Reading & Spelling System cannot be used simultaneously with other reading improvement programs.
Fidelity Checklist
Barton students reach—and often exceed—grade level in reading and spelling only when the tutor, resource specialist, or reading specialist uses the Barton Reading & Spelling System with fidelity, meaning exactly as it was designed.
Verify your staff or volunteer tutors are using the Barton Reading & Spelling system with our Barton Fidelity checklist.
Early Intervention
An Early Intervention Program is a way to find students at highest risk of reading failure early enough to prevent it.
